Elon Musk and Bill Gates are attending the G20 and B20 in Bali

This year in November, Bali will be in the midst of huge international events. The latest announcement from the G20 Bali Summit Committee is that tech pioneers Elon Musk and Bill Gates will attend the summit's business segment. This comes as huge news for the island as many locals and expats are excited about the visit of world leaders, both in government and business, and the impact it will have on their livelihoods.

Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta on May 24, B20 committee chairman Shinta Kamdani confirmed that Musk and Gates will attend the event.

Musk hinted at his presence during the business and investment forum in Davos, Switzerland, which took place in January this year. Confirmation of his presence will turn even more eyes on Bali during the two-day summit.

Political and business leaders will be in Bali to discuss the global economic recovery from COVID-19, climate change, and sustainable development. Kamdani said the B20 summit in Indonesia would have a specific focus on "green transition, equitable distribution of health services and inclusive growth."

Those in Indonesia's tech sector are excited about the upcoming visits of Elon Musk and Bill Gates, their investment in Indonesia's tech sector will create exciting jobs for thousands of people. President Joko Widodo is said to want to increase investment in Indonesia's technology sector and plans are no doubt being put together to ensure they can sit around the table together.

Bali is now a hub for digital entrepreneurs, digital nomads and remote workers. The growth of co-working spaces opening up in hotspots like Ubud and Canggu in Bali is a great example of the continued demand and interest from expats looking to telecommute in Bali.

The G20 and B20 conferences could start a conversation leading to legislative changes that make it easier for international non-residents to run their businesses from Bali, especially if they support the green economy. Indonesia's Minister of Tourism and Creative Economies also holds regular talks with Australian politicians to establish a cross-border partnership to promote the creative industries.

Bill Gates and Elon Musk - Bali G20 meeting 2022

As Indonesia emerges from the pandemic, the government will want to see tourism recover as it looks for opportunities to promote economic development and security outside of tourism. Bali has taken a huge financial hit during successive lockdowns, and the government appears eager to ensure the tourism sector recovers quickly while opening up new opportunities in the tech and creative industries to future-proof their GDP.

Local excitement over Elon Musk's visit may have to be put to rest as Bali has two more major international conferences to host before the G20 in November. From May 23-28, Bali hosts the 7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, another UN event. The summit will also be attended by President Joko Widodo and more than 2,000 Indonesian military personnel have been deployed to increase security on the island as 4,000 international delegates and their families arrive.

In June, Bali will host the 8th Travel Fair, which showcases Indonesia's outstanding tourism industry to the world. The summit will be attended by travel and leisure leaders and is an opportunity for Bali to once again showcase its unique offering to the world.

What many are now hoping for is a complete end to all Covid-19 restrictions. There is speculation whether the remaining indoor mask measures will be lifted. This will be known when the president ends his visit to Bali in connection with the meeting of the "Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction", as Bali is the pilot test for the resumption of tourism. The other crucial factor is the data coming in on the changes in the number of cases after the removal of the pre-arrival PCR test for vaccinated passengers.
